Difficult to find an establishment that serves equally good cocktails and food at the same time - The Owl House accomplishes this feat. The Owl House has the atmosphere of a really good hipster drinking nook feel, combined with inventive & flavoursome culinary dishes, lots of in house smoked meats, recommend the terrine in particular.

Awesome food!! Everything had such amazing natural flavour. Wasn't need for sauce as the chef had managed to bring out all the flavour from the ingredients he used. Loved the 3 ways cooked pork and the dory. Make sure you save space for dessert as it's just as good. Definitely coming back! :)

Our second time here, and we very much enjoyed it again. The food was excellent: interesting, well cooked and well presented. The menu is a bit pricey for this place to be a regular neighborhood go-to place, but it's ok for a date night or a special occasion. During Restaurant Week it was an absolute steal!

We got excited about this place because I like owls. Yes, we are that shallow. ALas, apart from the picture of the owl on the glass bottle that contained water on our table, there wasn't much of an owl to be seen. It was pretty disappointing and I didn't get much "owlishness" about the place. No owls, and no owl atmosphere. This place disappointed already. It's a small place above a bar. We walked into the bar and we were greeted by the barman where we were told the maitre d' would look after us upstairs. Ahem. The upstairs is particularly pokey and you couldn't fit a big table in there; lucky we were a party of two. And the maitre d' was a fancy way of saying the only waitress in the place, and who would leave us to fend for ourselves almost all night. Sure, she was polite enough and we sat down. We ordered the scallops as an entree to share, and I ordered the spatchcock, my partner ordered the pork three ways. The maire d' disappeared down the stairs andbasically it seems she disappears all night except when serving food. You don't really feel you are getting much attention. There were some quirky decorations around the place that kept us amused but many were covered in dust which was not a good look. The scallops were nice but it was not a big serve and it was fairly pricey for what it was. However the mains were better value, certainly in terms of quantity and definitely the spatchcock which seemed larger than the pork three ways. Both were tasty dishes; the crackling of the pork was a it hard but the pulled pork and pork slices were pretty nice. The spatchcock and quinoa bed it sat in was lovely, I almost choked on a spatchcock bone (not The Owl House's fault but it did put a dampener on the night), the waitress didn't seem to know what to do after she was called up but did seem to be suitably concerned and nice about getting me extra cool water, etc. We tried the honey and dijon mustard ice cream dessert. It sounds weird but it's actually pretty interesting. However the serving is miniscule, especially given the price of $14 - I would expect at least double the amount of ice cream for that - and it is served with rhubarb which is tasty but can overpower the unique ice cream taste. It's recommended you try to eat some of the ice cream without the rhubarb or with only a touch of it to really get the taste of the ice cream, as when I put more of the rhubarb on (thinking I had to since there was so little ice cream in proportion to the rhubarb sauce) I could barely taste the honey and dijon mustard. Again, this could be fixed by leaving the rhubarb amount the same but giving more ice cream. The place had quite nice food though the entree was poor value and the dessert could be either cheaper or bigger to make it good value; also the atmosphere and service were somewhat lacking. It was also pretty pricey given what it did offer.

About The Owl House

Have a hoot of a time Behind an unassuming red terrace door, on the Darlinghurst end of Crown Street, lies a neighbourhood watering hole that makes drinking at the ‘wrong’ end of Crown Street a much more pleasant affair. Downstairs, happy patrons crowd around the long narrow bar sipping cocktails under the oversized, naked light bulbs. Mingling with others, or even with owners Amir Halpert and Paul Loulli is not uncommon at this compact eatery so be prepared for bar banter and story trading if you enter this little local. Bar snacks such as smoked bone marrow and oxtail croquettes, and marinated Sicilian olives go down a treat. Or you can choose to dine upstairs on the second level, where things are a little more diner-friendly, and not such a tight squeeze. The best seats in the house are unquestionably up on the intimate balcony, which seats a party of four. But no matter where you sit at The Owl House, you’re sure to have one hoot of a time.
