My partner and I visited Argus Dining Room in late October to celebrate our 3 year anniversary and were looking forward to a lovely meal. Positives: The food that we had was very good quality. The kitchen are clearly holding up their end of the bargain. Edwina (who was not our waitress) was effectively a lone hand in the dining room. She was doing a great job under duress. Negatives: The service was absolutely appalling for a restaurant that positions itself as fine dining. When we arrived, we were greeted by the service manager, who made us stand and wait for a minute or so whilst he finished keying an order. We were seated and given menus. When our inexperienced waitress came over to take our order, we informed her that we had not yet seen a wine list despite being told by the manager that he was getting one. Once we ordered our wine, the waitress proceeded to spill it over the table whilst pouring and laugh it off as opposed to apologising. We asked a couple of questions about the menu and unfortunately, the waitress had no idea and had to go to the kitchen to enquire. For such a short menu, I felt that this was pretty basic. Lastly, we had to take it upon ourselves to advise our waitress that another table had been seated for over 20 minutes without receiving a food or drink menu. She literally had no idea. When told, she said thanks and promptly wandered off in the other direction. We ordered a glass of wine each and a main course, then left. Normally, we would have ordered a bottle of wine and a three course meal each, but could not do so as to sit there would have really aggravated us. It's such a shame as the food is very good, but the service is barely worthy of a pub.

About The Argus Dining Room

Seriously Garden Fresh The Argus Dining Room in Hepburn Springs gives a whole new meaning to garden fresh. Chefs just have to head out the kitchen door to pluck a few veges from the Argus Kitchen Garden. The fresh-from-the-backyard produce is supplemented with rare-breed beef and lamb that hails from a nearby farm in Smeaton. So who’s running the show in the kitchen? Executive Chef David Willcocks joined The Argus Dining Room after three years at the world-renowned Schilo Kitchen in Malaga, Spain. Sharing his passion for farm-to-table with diners, Willcocks creates dishes that speak for themselves. Start with the beetroot Carpaccio, served with pumpernickel, apple, buttermilk and wildflowers. Of course the menu is constantly reimagined depending on what’s fresh locally, so you’re likely to discover a just-created delight that will stay on the menu only fleetingly. There might be a Hampshire Down lamb loin or Sher Wagyu. For a true dining experience, try the five- or seven-course degustation menu, which includes a vegetarian option. If you’re looking for truly fresh and divine dining experience, look no further than The Argus Dining Room in Hepburn Springs. Best Dish: duck leg with a side of potatoes and charred leek.
