Having read numerous reviews, we were very excited to try St Hugo and booked it especially for a celebratory lunch. We arrived to a mostly empty restaurant, with only 2 other groups dining which is always a concern, especially when the region seemed very busy due to the Easter break. We selected the 4 course menu and matching wines, and settled in for what we hoped would be a lovely long lunch. Cutting a long, disappointing story short, the highlight of the day was the delicious baguette (from a nearby bakery) and butter which was much needed given we left hungry. The wines were also lovely though not groundbreaking, and definitely outshone the food. Speaking of, the portion sizes were too small and would have been appropriate for the 8 course, but not adjusted to the 4 course, so we ended up ordering more bread to fill us. The food was otherwise unremarkable and not to the standard we were hoping or had read about. For the price point, we were disappointed and dismayed. Upon reflection, it is now quite easy to understand why St Hugo’s competitors are consistently much busier and have a better reputation in the region. A shame given the potential and hype.

Fantastic evening with great service. A refreshing change to have the wine paired to the food, not the food paired to the wine!

Excellent service, well looked after with food allergies. Not much atmosphere due to quiet service day but made the venue feel more private which was great.

About St Hugo

Praise for St Hugo! At the home of St Hugo in the Barossa Valley, enjoy bespoke tastings, explore the vineyard and enjoy specially crafted wine flights in the superb restaurant space. The restaurant is a collaboration between Executive Chef Mark McNamara and Chief Winemaker Dan Swincer, and the pair have worked to produce an incredible expression of fine food and wine. Indulge in a four or eight course tasting menu, designed to complement the power and elegance of St Hugo wines, or book the Chef’s Table Experience which includes an unforgettable tour of the vineyard and kitchen garden. The restaurant itself is stunning and very elegant so you know you’re in for a treat. Best dish: the chef’s table option - trust us!
