Just like Papa’s Not since Old Papa’s closed its doors in 2003 has Freo had a restaurant that provides such authentic atmosphere and fresh local ingredients as is the rule at Limones Café. Focusing on modern home-style Italian cooking, Limones is housed in an old corner shop on one of East Fremantle’s most distinctive streets – George Street. It offers al fresco dining, just like Nunzio made popular in Fremantle back in 1976. The menu features meat, fish vegetarian and gluten-free options, however, it is the simple quality of food and presentation that lifts Limones to a level above other Fremantle eateries. In a city known for its food, particularly its Italian food, to stand out is an achievement. Locals recommend the fixed price three-course menu and single out the slow-roasted pork belly with cauliflower pure, kale and jus as an especial favourite. For breakfast you could try the Italian sausages with grilled bacon, tomato, mushroom, eggs and toast or for something more traditional the sweet and sour Italian vegetables with poached eggs. Best dish: Potato and ricotta gnocchi with fontina, spinach, and tomato sugo
