Expect the unexpected Pub menus can be pretty uninspired. Not so at the Brandon Hotel, located in Melbourne’s funky inner suburb of Carlton North. Whatever you were thinking you might see on the ‘bites’ menu, it probably wasn’t steamed bao comprising either pork belly with mustard greens and peanut and sticky hoisin or oyster mushrooms with lotus, bean sprouts and wasabi mayonnaise. The haloumi soft taco might also catch your eye, as it did ours. Heading straight towards the larger plates, you’d better try the Brandon’s take on the latest craze with their Americana burger - a true title-contender. Moving towards Asia, the Filipino caramelised pork ribs with coconut rice are sticky and more-ish. And at theBrandon, vegetarians are not left to contend with the basic vegie pasta that are often reluctantly added to ‘meat, meat and more meat’ pub menus. The seven vegetable tagine with couscous and zaalouk salad is so good it might even turn a carnivore’s head! The Brandon continues to delight with its dessert menu. We recommend you finish off the evening with the peanut butter parfait or the raspberry crumble. For a great foodie meal out at a fantastic little pub, head to the Brandon Hotel.
